Contractor and television personality, Mike Holmes, was awarded the highest accolade given by the British Columbia Institute of Technology, when he was awarded an honorary doctorate degree recently.
Contractor and television personality Mike Holmes was awarded the highest accolade given by the British Columbia Institute of Technology, when he was awarded an honorary doctorate degree recently.
The British Columbia Institute of Technology held its Winter Convocation ceremony on Feb. 21.
One of the highlights of the evening was when the school awarded honourary degrees to individuals who are widely recognized for their outstanding and sustained achievements in their area of expertise.
Holmes was presented the honorary degree of Doctor of Technology.
“Mr. Holmes is an extraordinary craftsperson, he is also passionate about his many philanthropic ventures,” said Dr. Verna Magee-Shepherd, BCIT’s acting president.
“We are pleased to award him with this degree, as he sets a positive example not only for our trades students, but for all members of the BCIT community.”
Holmes is best known for his work as host of the popular television show Holmes on Homes.
The focus of the show is for Holmes to help homeowners who have either been ripped-off by a contractor or have been left with a mess by a contractor.
Holmes was trained in all aspects of construction and renovation by his father, a master plumber, and developed his expertise on the job.
With more than two decades of construction experience, he has earned an outstanding reputation for his honesty and professionalism.
He has the ability to tackle any home improvement project, including plumbing, electrical and carpentry.
In addition to his work as a television host, he has established The Holmes Foundation.
The charitable foundation has a mission to ensure all residential renovation and construction in Canada is done right the first time.
In 2007, The Holmes Foundation announced the establishment of the Make It Right Scholarships and Bursaries.
They are designed to encourage students in Canadian colleges who have demonstrated a commitment to excellence in residential renovation or construction to complete their academic training.
Holmes is the national spokesperson for SOS Children’s Villages, an international charity that helps feed and house neglected and abandoned children.
He has also supported a number of charities across the country.
