Cloudworks Energy Inc. awarded Peter Kiewit Sons Co., a subsidiary of Kiewit Corporation, a $392 million contract to design, procure, build and commission six separate run-of-river hydroelectric projects.
A Vancouver-based company is building a cluster of hydroelectric generating facilities in southern B.C.
Cloudworks Energy Inc. awarded Peter Kiewit Sons Co., a subsidiary of Kiewit Corporation, a $392 million contract to design, procure, build and commission six separate run-of-river hydroelectric projects.
The projects are in the Kwalsa and Upper Stave regions of British Columbia.
They are known as Douglas Creek, Fire Creek, Stokke Creek, Tipella Creek, Lamont Creek and Upper Stave River and will serve a new substation to be built at the northern end of Harrison Lake.
Each project is comprised of an intake structure, a penstock, a powerhouse and a tailrace channel.
A 70-kilometer transmission line will run between select powerhouses and switchyards to the main substation.
The new substation will connect to the existing 360 kV line.
It will provide hydroelectricity to the province and the Douglas First Nations communities in Tipella and Port Douglas, which are now served by diesel-generated electricity.
Six of the eight projects, were awarded Energy Purchase Agreements as part of BC Hydro’s 2006 Call for Energy. These projects are grouped under the name Harrison Hydro LP.
The project will provide 90 megawatts of hydro electricity which is enough to power about 30,000 homes
Completion of the projects is slated for November 2010.
