Alberta announces permanent housing project for Calgary’s homeless

CALGARY, ALTA. — Construction will begin later this year on a Calgary housing project that will create permanent residences for the homeless.

The Alberta government announced in the 2018 budget that it would invest $1.7 million on 68 permanent supportive housing units in the Forest Lawn and Hillhurst neighbourhoods through the HomeSpace Society, a rental agency specializing in affordable housing.

The Calgary Homeless Foundation will provide support at both of the new housing units with funding from the provincial government.

“This project will provide homes and support to vulnerable Albertans with complex needs and help to break the cycle of chronic homelessness,” said Community and Social Services Minister and acting Minister of Seniors and Housing Irfan Sabir in a statement.

Completion of the project is expected by 2020.

“This year, the city held its largest residential land sale for non-profit affordable housing providers, and this provincial funding announcement will build affordable housing on two of three of the land parcels purchased by HomeSpace. It demonstrates our readiness to uptake federal and provincial funding by working together to scale up non-profits to increase the supply of affordable housing. In short: we’re building stronger, more resilient communities for all Calgarians,” Calgary Mayor Naheed Nenshi added.
