Vancouver's Jewish Community Centre set for $427M revamp

VANCOUVER — The Jewish Community Centre of Greater Vancouver (JCC) is set to undergo a significant redevelopment, transforming it into a modern, inclusive hub for cultural, recreational and educational activities.

The JCC, established in 1961, has long been a staple in Vancouver for its extensive services and programs.

The redevelopment project involves constructing a new 200,000-square-foot community centre, featuring expanded early childhood education, youth and teen centres, fitness and aquatics facilities, a seniors centre, a 450-seat theatre, cultural and art spaces, and offices for community organizations.

In addition to the community centre, the project aims to address Vancouver’s housing crisis by providing up to 600 units of mixed-use rental housing. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to increase child care spaces and deliver an expanded senior centre and day centre.

The total budget for the JCC’s redevelopment is $427 million, with the community centre construction estimated at $155 million, scheduled for completion in late 2024.

The rental housing component is set to cost around $272 million, with a completion target of 2027/28. The property will be placed into a Jewish community land trust or a similar community structure.
