Evolugen commissions Spring Coulee Solar Project in Alberta

GATINEAU, QUE. — Canadian renewable energy developer Evolugen has announced the commissioning of the Spring Coulee Solar Project, the firm’s first utility solar facility in Alberta.

The 42-megawatt solar farm, located northeast of Cardston, Alta., was completed on time and on budget following groundbreaking in April 2023, stated a release. Evolugen is the Canadian renewable energy platform of Brookfield Asset Management.

PCL Solar acted as the prime contractor for the project, handling the engineering, procurement and construction of the project. The project had a peak workforce of 200 employees and contractors.

Scotiabank will purchase electricity and associated environmental attributes from the project through a 15-year power purchase agreement announced in February 2022. The deal enables Scotiabank to attain its goal to purchase emission-free electricity in Canada.

Evolugen has other solar, wind, hydro and battery storage projects in development across the country.

“We are excited to see our first solar project in Southern Alberta come to fruition,” said Evolugen CEO Josee Guibord, CEO, in a statement. “Spring Coulee Solar Project demonstrates our capacity to deliver high quality renewable energy solutions that benefit our partners, communities, and the environment.
