OTTAWA — The Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency is inviting public comments on the potential environmental effects of the proposed Contrecoeur Port Terminal Expansion Project, located in Contrecoeur.
The Montreal Port Authority proposes the construction of a container port terminal with a maximum annual capacity of 1.15-million containers on its property in Contrecoeur, located downstream from Montreal, a recent statement said.
The project would include the construction of a 675-metre dock for two berths to accommodate vessels between 39,000 and 75,400 deadweight tonnage. The project would also include a seven-track classification yard, a container storage and handling area, an intermodal rail yard, support facilities, rail and road accesses, a truck control area and a viaduct on Route 132.
A statement on the Port of Montreal website said it is expected that current container‐handling facilities located on the Island of Montreal will reach full capacity during the next decade.
According to current growth projections, the terminal would begin operating towards the middle of the next decade, the statement said.
The deadline for public comments is March 9, 2018.
