Oshawa sets building record in June for industrial permit

OSHAWA, ONT. — The City of Oshawa, Ont. set another building record in June with the highest industrial permit values at $62.93 million since 1986 when it was $16.47 million.

The June 2020 building record follows five additional building records the city has set this year, three in April and two in March.

In addition, year-to-date construction value issued in Oshawa has already exceeded 2019’s total construction value by $8 million.

Four major projects were issued which contributed to the building record in June:

• CSPAC Industrial Thornton and Wentworth – new industrial (883 Thornton Rd. S.) with a total value of $49,100,400;
• Oshawa South Self Storage Limited Partnership – new industrial self-storage building (600 Fox St.) with a total value of $13,800,000;
• 2285136 Ontario Ltd. – new commercial building (2610 Simcoe St. N.) for a total value of $4,700,000; and
• RioCan Management Inc. – new commercial building (2650 Simcoe St. N.) for a total value of $4,025,600.

During the month of June, the city issued 96 building permits for a total of $82.5 million in construction value, breaking down to $62.93 million in industrial construction, $9.95 million in residential, $9.6 million in commercial and $28,400 in governmental/institutional, indicates a release.

The city also issued 26 new residential units consisting of 10 semi-detached units, nine accessory dwelling units and seven single-detached dwellings.

Oshawa’s year-to-date residential construction value ($243,073,600) has already surpassed last year’s total by $89.5 million, states the release, adding year-to-date categories of total construction value, number of semi-detached dwellings and apartments as well as total residential units have all surpassed 2019 year-end totals.

“At the mid-way point in 2020, a year with unprecedented challenges, it is remarkable how the City of Oshawa has broken its sixth building record,” said Councillor Rosemary McConkey, vice-chair of the development services committee, in a statement. “From the new commercial buildings by the RioCan plaza and Highway 407, to additional storage units by the Smart Centre plaza and Highway 401, together with almost $10 million in residential building permits across the city for the month of June, amount to the kind of activity indicative of a strong economic outlook for Oshawa.”
