HAMILTON, ONT. — The Ontario government is investing $1.3 million in two projects at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ont. to help up to 236 jobseekers train for careers and get practical on-the-job experience in the automotive and manufacturing sectors.
The training includes a program to help unemployed or underutilized employees learn new manufacturing technologies and internships and work placements to help postsecondary students and recent graduates learn the skills they need to launch a career in the sectors, indicates a recent release.
The projects aim to encourage partnerships between industry, education and training providers that help employers find skilled workers and help jobseekers find well-paid careers.
“Due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, there are sectors that have contracted while others have continued to grow,” said Jane McKenna, parliamentary assistant to the minister of labour, training and skills development and MPP for Burlington, in a statement. “These training programs will assist workers in Hamilton/Halton and Niagara who are unemployed or underutilized by enhancing their skills and connecting them with jobs that are in-demand.”
