Construction capacity spikes in Q3
Statistics Canada reported this morning on third-quarter industrial capacity utilization rates in the third quarter of 2020. Construction showed strength in the quarter compared to other sectors with capacity utilization in the sector rising 7.2 percentage points to 87.2 per cent. This increase coincided with low mortgage rates, more favourable labour market conditions and higher pay for employees, the report stated. Building permit values posted sharp gains, up 17 per cent during the quarter.
Mattamy launches new project in Florida
Toronto-based Mattamy Homes announced Dec. 9 it has commenced construction on its Island Village project at Celebration, Fla. Plans are to build more than 1,000 homes in a resort-style setting. Mattamy is North America’s largest privately owned homebuilder.

Lumber prices decline in November
Statistics Canada also reported today that the industrial product price index (IPPI) decreased 0.6 per cent on a month-over-month basis in November. The decline in the IPPI was led mainly by a reduction in the price for lumber and other wood products (minus 11.1 per cent), particularly softwood lumber (down 21.1 per cent), which posted its second consecutive monthly decline after a record increase in August (up 23.3 per cent) and near-record increases in July (up 22.5 per cent) and September (up 20.6 per cent).
Impact agency seeks comments on LNG Canada Export Terminal Project
The Impact Assessment Agency of Canada issued a statement yesterday indicating it is proposing changes to conditions for the LNG Canada Export Terminal Project targeted for Kitimat, B.C. The project was approved in June 2015. The proposed changes to the conditions include revising the underwater noise thresholds and exclusion boundaries for the protection of marine mammals during construction. The agency has issued a draft analysis report and is accepting comments until Jan. 25, 2021.
