Holiday lights shimmer as work moves up on the new Toronto Courthouse in Toronto.
EllisDon Infrastructure is designing, building, financing and maintaining the courthouse awarded by Infrastructure Ontario (IO) and the Ministry of the Attorney General. EllisDon Design Build Inc. is the constructor of the 17-storey project atop a four-storey podium that will include a barrier-free environment; video conferencing, closed-circuit television, 63 courtrooms, video/audio systems; a single point of entry with magnetometers, baggage scanners, continuous video surveillance, separate corridors for security; and the first Indigenous Learning Centre in an Ontario courthouse. IO and the City of Toronto partnered to display artifacts mainly from the late 19th and early 20th centuries at City Hall that were found on the site during an archeological excavation in 2015. Renzo Piano Building Workshop in partnership with NORR Architects & Engineers Limited are the designers. EllisDon Facilities Services Inc. and SNC-Lavalin O&M are facilities management and EllisDon Capital Inc. is the financial adviser. The project is designed for LEED Silver certification and completion has been scheduled for Spring 2022.
