TORONTO – Ontario and Michigan have announced a new partnership to advance cross-border automotive, transportation and mobility technologies.
The Ontario government, through Ontario’s Autonomous Vehicle Innovation Network (AVIN), and the State of Michigan, through the Michigan Department of Transportation, have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to study the implementation of a cross-border testing system that will enable further commercialization and adoption of auto and transportation technologies in both jurisdictions.
The partnership will study the potential economic, social and environmental benefits from increased collaboration in automotive and transportation technologies between the jurisdictions and identify issues related to specific types of border crossings, stated an Aug. 18 release.
Combined, Ontario and Michigan are responsible for about 22 per cent of North America’s automotive output. Many companies operate on both sides of the border, with engineering expertise and technology innovation shared between the two autotech hubs.
As a first action under the new MOU, a joint request for proposals is now underway to study the economic potential of expanded border capacity and other benefits that can be achieved by developing advanced automotive and smart mobility systems at international border crossings. The closing date for RFP submissions is Sept. 13.
Ontario’s AVIN supports more than 300 companies and organizations involved in developing connected and autonomous vehicle technologies.
