SAULT STE. MARIE — A contractor based in Sault Ste. Marie, Ont. has been fined $60,000 for its role in a 2020 workplace mishap in which a worker with inadequate fall protection equipment was seriously injured.
R. F. Contracting Inc. was convicted of an offence under the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) on Jan. 24, 2023.
On April 21, 2020, four workers were cleaning out an industrial biomass furnace located on Base Line in Sault Ste. Marie. One of the workers, who was wearing an unanchored fall protection harness and tether, stepped inside the furnace and fell approximately 28 feet inside the furnace, sustaining serious injuries.
R. F. Contracting was found to have failed to ensure that the measures prescribed by section 85(a) of Regulation 851, R.R.O. 1990, were carried out at a workplace, contrary to section 25(1)(c) of the OHSA. Following a guilty plea in the Ontario Court of Justice in Sault Ste. Marie, the firm was fined by Justice of the Peace Kyle Cachagee.
