Northcrest launches Experience Centre at former Downsview lands
GARCIA CREATIVE — The YZD Experience Centre and Plaza will form part of a community hub created by the developer as the long-term plans for the 370-acre former Toronto Downsview airport property take shape.

TORONTO — Northcrest Developments has opened a new destination centre as it continues the redevelopment of the former Downsview Airport lands in northwest Toronto.

The YZD Experience Centre and Plaza will form part of a community hub created by the developer as the long-term plans for the 370-acre former airport property take shape.

The 16,150-square-foot experience centre offers a preview of the YZD development along with opportunities for recreation and socialization. There will be free weekly events and a programming series, Weekends at YZD, featuring a regular schedule of events, programs and pop-ups.

A highlight of the centre is the Community Hall, a multipurpose space that can accommodate a wide range of activities, from meetings to informal gatherings, education and fitness.

Current installations include playscapes designed by Montreal-based Future Simple Studio, including a modular canopy structure with swings for the fall season; a 3,900-square-foot mural by local Toronto artist Jacquie Comrie; free art-inspired mini-golf; and other outdoor games.

The YZD development will eventually comprise seven new neighbourhoods with 55,000 residents and employment for 23,000 people.

“For the past several years, we’ve connected with thousands of people through formal meetings, townhalls and various activations and pop-up events. A consistent theme has emerged: there is a genuine need for accessible communal spaces. Prior to the extraordinary public spaces that will be delivered as part of the redevelopment, the Experience Centre and Plaza will address that need,” stated Mitchell Marcus, executive director of site activation and programming for YZD, in a satement.
