Stantec Inc. (TSX:STN) of Edmonton has been awarded a $30 million consulting engineering contract with SaskPower for the Saskatchewan electrical utility’s Boundary Dam Integrated Carbon Capture and Storage Demonstration Project near Estevan.
The contract calls for Stantec to work on design and to ensure that work done by other contractors is completed in accordance with engineering and construction requirements.
SaskPower, which generates and distributes electrical power in Saskatchewan, is working on a $1.24 billion clean coal plant at Boundary Dam, scheduled to begin operations in 2014. The work, which started in April, entails the rebuilding of Unit 3 of the power station.
For more information in a previous article on the project, please see SaskPower building carbon capture into $1.2-billion retrofit of Boundary Dam generating station.
The new generating unit will have the capacity to produce 110 megawatts of power. SaskPower plans to sell the captured carbon dioxide for oil recovery operations and to sell captured sulphur dioxide to sulphuric acid manufacturers.
The Boundary Dam power station has six units with a combined capacity of 824 MW.
