Ontario Power Generation starts construction of Darlington Energy Complex

Darlington Energy Complex east of Toronto will be used to train staff working on the refurbishment of the Darlington Nuclear Generating Station. McKay-Cocker Construction Ltd. of London, Ontario is the lead contractor on the building.

Ontario Power Generation broke ground this week on the Darlington Energy Complex, which will be used to train staff working on the refurbishment of the the Darlington Nuclear Generating Station about 70 kilometres east of Toronto.

McKay-Cocker Construction Ltd. of London, Ontario and its subcontractors will build the facility near the nuclear power plant in the Town of Clarington.

The Darlington electrical power plant has four nuclear units with a total output of about 3.5 Gigawatts. Construction on a mid-life refurbishment is scheduled to begin in 2016.

The Darlington Energy Complex, scheduled for completion in 2013, is intended to support the mid-life refurbishment of the nuclear plant itself by including a full-scale mockup of the reactor, a public information centre, security processing centre and a tooling and testing facility.

The 250,000-square-foot building is in Clarington Energy Park west of the Darlington plant.
