Suncor Energy delays plans for Sarnia ethanol plant expansion

Daily Commercial News

Suncor Energy Inc is delaying a $120 million expansion of its Sarnia, Ont. ethanol plant by at least a year, local media report.

Sarnia

Suncor Energy Inc is delaying a previously announced $120-million expansion of its Sarnia, Ont. ethanol plant by at least a year, local media report.

The Sarnia Observer said on its website that Suncor planned to delay work on the plant until 2010, citing a statement from company spokesman Jason Vaillant.

The expansion was aimed at doubling ethanol output at the southern Ontario facility, to 400 million litres (106 million gallons) a year.

The company had said it planned to finish the work in late 2009.

Suncor touted the expansion as a major part of its plan to invest $750 million in renewable energy initiatives by 2012.

The current plant began operations in 2006. The ethanol is blended into the company’s Sunoco-branded gasoline.
