The Toronto-based Zeidler Partnership has been selected by the Assuta Medical Centers Ltd. of Israel to design a 400-bed, 60,000-square-metre diagnostic and procedures hospital in Tel Aviv.

Currently in the design development phase, the Assuta Medical Center project is being fast-tracked. Construction documents are being prepared by Israeli architects Avi Moore of Tel Aviv.

To be constructed in two stages, the facility will include 24 surgical suites. The proposed opening date for the first phase is 2007.

The medical facilities will be built on top of, and accommodate, an existing foundation for an office building that was abandoned while under construction. Foundation retrofit work got under way in October.

The first phase of the project will include four levels of parking below grade and approximately 45,000 square metres above grade.

Intensive “visioning” and design sessions were held in March with the Assuta client team at the architects’ Queen Street offices.

The design team includes senior partners Eb Zeidler and Tarek El-Khatib.

Assuta Medical Centers Ltd. operates specialized medical centres in Israel, including the country’s largest private hospital.

The Zeidler Partnership said the new centre, to be located on Habarzel Street in the northern sector of Tel Aviv, will add significantly to the capacity of the existing six Assuta facilities in Israel.
