Brampton breaks ground on Century Gardens Recreation Centre addition
Brampton officials say the new Century Gardens recreation centre will cater to the needs of their growing community.

The new $16.1 million, 110,000-square-foot renovation includes a second ice pad and larger change room facilities.

Infrastructure

Ground has broken on a $16.1 million community centre renovation project in Brampton, Ont., part of an ambitious $120 million municipal redevelopment.

The new 110,000-square-foot Century Gardens Recreation Centre will add a second ice pad, expanded parking, and larger change room facilities. Construction began in May, and the facility will re-open in the fall of 2008.

“This is not just about renovation, but modernization,” said Gordon Smith, City of Brampton spokesperson.

The more than 30-year-old building has not had a single renovation done during its lifetime, Smith said.

The architect for the project is Giffels Associates Limited of Toronto, while Mississauga-based PCL Constructors Canada Inc. is the construction manager, and Greenspoon Specialty Contracting is the subcontractor.

“All of our infrastructure we build has a shelf-life of 40 or 50 years,” said Brampton Mayor Susan Fennell, who attended the groundbreaking ceremony with other municipal officials. “So we still need to fund upgrades and modernization. We take pride in our facilities here in Brampton.”

Fennell said the high rate of growth in Brampton has pushed the municipal government to invest in a number of new construction projects, including the Brampton Civic Hospital, slated to open later this year. Since 2001, the city has expanded from 325,000 people to an estimated 450,000 today.

Construction on the recreation centre is one component of Brampton’s $120 million Making Great Things Happen campaign. The other elements of the campaign include $53.7 million for construction of the 165,000-square-foot Cassie Campbell Community Centre, $36.1 million to build a 143,000-square-foot indoor soccer field, and $15.2 million for modernization of the Earnscliffe Recreation Centre.
