EXPO City construction slated to start north of Toronto
EXPO-1 condominium tower in Vaughan, designed by architect Alan Tregebov of YYZed Project ManagementOntario north of Toronto.

Construction is expected to get underway early next year on EXPO-1, the first of five planned residential towers in the EXPO City development in the city of Vaughan, north of Toronto. Located near the interchange of Highway 7 and Highway 400, the development will include a Cortel Group community of five towers, and the Vaughan Metropolitan subway stop on the Toronto-York Spadina Subway Extension, owned by the Toronto Transit Commission.

Construction is expected to get underway early next year on EXPO-1, the first of five planned residential towers in the EXPO City development at the crossroads of Highways 7 and 400 in the heart of Vaughan.

“We are fortunate to have this rare opportunity to create a sustainable community from a clean slate and help bring the (proposed) Vaughan Metropolitan Centre to life,” said Mario Cortellucci, president and CEO of the Cortel Group.

At the core of Vaughan’s new master-planned development is EXPO City, a Cortel community comprised of five towers “that will each have a unique identity but share similar elements.”

The master plan includes an urban square, retail galleria, a pedestrian and bike-friendly grand boulevard and a short walk to the Toronto Transit Commission’s new Vaughan Metropolitan subway stop.

EXPO City also features a 20,000-square-foot amenity space that includes a fitness center equipped with a yoga studio and an indoor pool that opens to a roof top garden.

As the first project to break ground, EXPO-1 will set the tone for future development in the new city centre.  Inspired by water, the 37-storey building designed by architect AlanTregebov of YYZed Project Management “evokes the feeling of movement” with waves effortlessly ascending the building’s façade.

“Incorporating vertical motion in the building’s design not only gives this first residential tower for EXPO City an organic character but also speaks to the sustainability of the entire project,” said Tregebov.

Surrounded by lush greenery and water reservoirs, EXPO City will feature the latest in rainwater management systems. More than an acre of green rooftops will capture the excess water that is then treated and funneled back into the community’s natural eco-system.

Working together to reduce the building’s carbon footprint, YYZed and the Cortel Group sourced predominantly local construction materials and opted for a post-tensioned structural system, which allows for a lighter structure that uses less material.

The Cortel Group said another “unique “feature of EXPO-1 is the position of the building on an 18-degree angle, to ensure maximum sun exposure in each of the 337 units and unobstructed views for each residential tower. Six penthouses will create a lantern effect on top of the building.

Set for completion in 2014, the first residence of EXPO City offers suites ranging from 527 square-feet to 2,088 square-feet.

For the first time in its history, the TTC will extend outside the city of Toronto with the expansion of the Spadina line up to Highway 7 adding six new stops, the last of which will be the Vaughan Metropolitan Centre.

The planned transformation of Highway 7 into a tree-lined avenue with dedicated VIVA rapid transit bus lanes converging at the Vaughan Metropolitan Centre will further enhance transportation across the east-west corridor.
