Ground breaks on new Canon Canada headquarters in Brampton

Canon Canada is moving forward with the construction of a new Canadian headquarters in Brampton, Ontario, which will replace the company’s current office in Mississauga.

BRAMPTON, ONT.

Canon Canada is moving forward with the construction of a new Canadian headquarters in Brampton, Ontario, which will replace the company’s current office in Mississauga.

“Our vision for Canon Canada's headquarters goes beyond being an infrastructure investment or a building where our employees work,” said Ted Egawa, president and CEO of Canon Canada Inc., in a statement. “We want our new headquarters to become a community for our employees and for our customers.”

The ground breaking ceremony for the new five-storey building took place on May 6, which was attended by Canon Canada executives, Japan’s Ambassador to Canada, Norihiro Okuda, as well as other dignitaries.

The facility will be located at the corner of Mississauga Road and Steeles Avenue West. It will be built on a site that has more than 18 acres of land and is surrounded by green space.

The site will include a walking trail, drought-resistant landscaping and a naturalized storm water management pond to benefit Canon and the adjacent residential community. The new 180,000-square-foot building will replace the company’s current office in Mississauga, which has been its home since 1984.

The building features a 5,000-square-foot showroom to display Canon’s products and technology. It will also include full-service cafeteria, fitness centre, bike racks, two-tiered terrace and 500 parking spaces. Canon expects construction to be completed by December 2015.

Canon Canada’s future headquarters is being designed to reflect the company’s worldwide commitment to the environment and sustainability. In particular, it is designed to align with the Kyosei philosophy, which means harmoniously living and working together for the common good.

“By combining Kyosei with high-quality, simplicity and functionality, the brand-defining characteristics which have made Canon products successful, we have created a space that will inspire collaboration and innovation”, said Egawa.

Moriyama & Teshima is the architectural firm that is leading the construction of the building. Canon is seeking to achieve Gold certification for new building under the Leadership in Energy and Environmental design (LEED) rating system.

Sustainable design elements planned include: the incorporation of lots of natural light, energy-efficient equipment and collecting rain water for reuse. The project manager is MHPM Project Managers Inc.

The Province of Ontario has designated Brampton as an urban growth area and by 2031 the population of the city is expected to be about 725,000.
