New Woodstock Toyota plant still in the design stage

Construction on a Toyota auto plant in Woodstock is still in the early stages, says a company spokesperson.

LONDON

Construction on a Toyota auto plant in Woodstock is still in the early stages, says a company spokesperson.

“Everything’s on schedule but these are just the early days of the project,” said Adriaan Korstanje, Toyota Manufacturing Canada’s assistant general manager of external communications.

Korstanje said earth leveling for the facility’s main building and parking area had been completed and leveling the earth for the plant’s ancillary buildings and test track was now taking place.

Next week some foundation work is scheduled to begin. It will continue into November, he said.

And in about a month “you’ll see some steel starting to appear,” he said.

However, the plant’s final design and the final plan of the production layout are still under consideration, he said.

Korstanje said the Canadian arm of the corporation is designing the plant in cooperation with the company’s North American branch and its head office in Japan.

Just who will be involved in building the plant has not yet been released.

First announced in 2005, the $800 million plant will manufacture the auto company’s RAV4 sport utility vehicle.

Company spokespeople have previously said the decision to locate the plant on 1,000 acres in Woodstock’s north east end was made because of its proximity to Toyota’s Cambridge plant, which will oversee the new facility.

Access to rail and major highways as well as to a skilled work force were other deciding factors, they said.

The plant will start production in 2008.

Once up and running it will have the capacity to generate 100,000 vehicles annually and employ 1,300 people.
