Engineering excellence

Consulting Engineers of Ontario (CEO) has recognized the achievements of the province’s engineering fraternity in its 2005 awards program.

Awards of excellence were presented for the most outstanding project in four categories, based on the size of firm. Awards of merit were bestowed as well.

In addition, the Willis Chipman Award was given for the project that best demonstrates the contribution of consulting engineering to the economic, social and environmental quality of life in Ontario.

“By recognizing outstanding projects, we will not only be showcasing the knowledge, skill and expertise of consulting engineers, but also the importance of consulting engineering to our quality of life,” said Claude Paul Boivin, president of the Association of Consulting Engineers of Canada.

“(It) is an important step toward demonstrating our professionalism to our peers, to our clients and to the public that rely on consulting engineering services every day.”

The 2005 Chipman award went to Marshall Macklin Monaghan (MMM) Ltd., lead firm of MGP Project Managers, a joint venture of MMM, Giffels Associates Ltd. and Parsons Corp. MGP was program management consultant to the Greater Toronto Airports Authority on the $3.3 billion terminal development program at Pearson airport. The new terminal was built by a joint venture of PCL Constructors Canada Inc. and Aecon Group Inc.

Winners of awards of excellence were:

The structure supports more than 8,000 square-feet of signage, including Canada’s largest Trivision screen, making it one of the largest media towers in North America. Wind-tunnel studies, detailed phasing drawings, three-dimensional models and the development of innovative hidden connections were all critical components of the project which was undertaken for Cadillac Fairview Corp. Ltd. Banerjee worked with Queen’s Quay Architects International Inc., the Zeidler Grinnell Partnership Architects, Hidi Rae Consulting Engineers, Williams, Davies & Irwin Inc., structural steel fabricator Walters Inc. and PCL Constructors Canada Inc. The award was for firms with one to 20 employees.

• Smith and Andersen Consulting Engineering for the Killbear Provincial Park Discovery Centre. The client was Urbana Architects on behalf of Ontario Parks and the Ministry of Natural Resources. Smith and Andersen also worked with Blackwell Engineering Ltd. and Mulvey and Banani International. Contractors included M.J. Dixon Construction and Soan Mechanical Ltd. The award was presented in the category of firms with 21 to 100 employees.

The award was in the category of firms with 101 to 200 employees.

CEO said MRC’s “creative and innovative” design solutions addressed the many constraints and challenges associated with the highly complex reconstruction.
