Winners have been announced for the Canadian Institute of Steel Construction’s (CISC) biennial National Steel Design Awards of Excellence.

The projects were awarded during CISC’s recent annual conference in St. John’s, N.L.

According to a CISC press release, the awards are a culmination of a two year competition that brings together regional winners from across the country in four award categories: architectural, engineering, sustainability and bridges.

The 2014 winners are:

— In the engineering category, the Canadian Museum for Human Rights in Manitoba received top honours. Structural steel was used to overcome numerous design and construction challenges for the architecturally complex museum superstructure.

The project team consists of the Owner: Canadian Museum for Human Rights; Structural Engineer: Yolles; Architect: Smith Carter Architects/Antoine Predocl Architect PC; Project Manager/General Contractor: PCL Winnipeg; Fabricator, Detailer and Erector: Walters Group Inc.

— The Capilano Cliffwalk in British Columbia was recognized in the architectural category.

The Cliffwalk is an eco-adventure that allows people access to the face of a 90-metre high grante cliff on a labyrinth-like series of narrow steel cantilevered bridges, stairs and platforms.

The project team is made up of the Owner: Capilano Group of Companies; Structural Engineer: Morrison Hershfield Ltd.; Project Manager / General Contractor: Marc Luc Lalumiere; Fabricator and Detailer: Solid Rock Steel Fabricating Co. Ltd.; and Erector: Marc Luc Lalumiere, Solid Rock Steel Fabricating Co. Ltd.

— The Nova Scotia Power Corporate Headquarters was recognized in the sustainability department. The project involves the retention and adaptive reuse of a former power generating plant to become the headquarters for the provincial electrical utility and is the first in Atlantic Canada to receive LEED Platinum certification.

The project team is made up of Owner: Nova Scotia Power Incorporated; Structural Engineer: BMR Structural Engineering Limited; Architect: WZMH; Fabricator and Erector: Marid Industries Ltd.

The Peace Bridge in Alberta was recognized in the bridge category. The pedestrian/cyclist bridge connects the vibrant neighbourhoods of Sunnyside and Hillhurst to the city’s downtown core.

The project team is made up of Owner: City of Calgary; Structural Engineer: Santiago Calatrava LLC/Stantec Consulting Ltd.; Architect: Santiago Calatrava LLC; Project Manager / General Contractor: Graham Infrastructure Ltd.; Erector: Norfab Mfg. Inc.
