Lanes to be reduced on Gardiner Expressway in March

TORONTO—Rehabilitation work is progressing on the underside of the Gardiner Expressway in Toronto.

Work began in November last year. In March, depending on the weather, the expressway will be reduced to two lanes in each direction between Dufferin Street and Strachan Avenue, with intermittent, additional lane reductions as required.

Last October, the General Government Committee authorized the city to enter into an agreement with Grascan Construction Limited to provide design and construction services for the Gardiner Expressway between Dufferin Street and Strachan Avenue.

More details on the work are expected to be shared in the coming weeks through a construction notice, a community meeting and a public awareness campaign.

Work on this section of the Gardiner is expected to be completed by mid-2027.

The work is part two of a six-part strategic rehabilitation plan which was approved by city council between 2014 and 2016.

The city has structured the contract to pause construction during the FIFA World Cup which the city will host in 2026. The lane restrictions will be removed from May to the end of July 2026 to allow for full capacity of the expressway during the sporting event.

In December 2023, city council approved the term sheet of the Ontario-Toronto New Deal Agreement, a package of provincial supports to assist the city with its long-term financial plan. Within the listing of provincial supports, the capital and operating costs of the Gardiner Expressway and Don Valley Parkway are to be uploaded, subject to third-party due diligence targeted to be completed by the 2024-year end.

Both the city and province continue to meet to advance next steps of the Gardiner and the Don Valley Parkway upload.
