Barrie woman dead after crash into watermain excavation

BARRIE, ONT. — A 69-year-old Barrie, Ont. woman who was a passenger in a car driven by a 78-year-old Barrie man has died from injuries sustained after they crashed into a crater opened by a construction crew working on watermain repairs.

A Barrie police report said officers were already at the scene in the vicinity of Yonge Street and Big Bay Point Road Saturday afternoon at 2:56 p.m. as repairs were being made to a watermain that had broken the day before when the vehicle approached the closed-off area. The southbound car hit material being used for repairs before plummeting into the hole in the road.

The occupants of the vehicle were transported to a local hospital by the County of Simcoe Paramedic Services where the female passenger was pronounced dead. The male driver was air-lifted to a Toronto area trauma centre where he is being treated for life-threatening injuries.

The Ministry of Labour was notified and the investigation continues. There were three workers at the scene working on the watermain but none were injured. Two workers were employed by Duivenvoorden Haulage Ltd. and one was working for the City of Barrie.

On April 8, one order was issued by the ministry to the City of Barrie to provide a written report and one requirement was issued to the city for documentation.

The police investigation is continuing and is being conducted by members of the Barrie Police Traffic Unit, assisted by the Forensic Identification Unit and Investigative Services.
