Toronto restaurant complex selected project of year

Daily Commercial News

The Boilerhouse restaurant complex in Toronto’s historic distillery district has been recognized as project of the year in the Association of Registered Interior Designers of Ontario’s 2004 awards program.

The Boilerhouse restaurant complex in Toronto’s historic distillery district has been recognized as project of the year in the Association of Registered Interior Designers of Ontario’s 2004 awards program.

The complex also received an award of excellence in the restoration and adaptive re-use category.

The interior designers were Mackay/Wong Strategic Design and Eagar Co. Architecture Design.

In a statement posted on its Web site, Mackay/Wong said the design team’s challenge was to create two “memorable” restaurant interiors located within adjoining buildings on the Gooderham Worts Distillery site.

“Architecturally sensitive design strategies were employed to offer a creative and memorable hospitality experience within this uniquely historical setting.”

The firm said a sense of prior occupation and architectural history was reinforced through the collage of reused site artifacts and materials.

“Utilizing available site materials such as wood, brick and steel, the design team created a design vocabulary that was both contemporary and sympathetic to the materials’ industrial heritage. The sensitive reuse of existing materials played a significant role in the final award-winning space.”

The association said the project of the year award is given to a project “that demonstrates the comprehensive, in-depth and innovative use of interior design disciplines and recognizes the health, safety and well-being of the public.”
