Wall-breaking ceremony launches building of UTM wellness centre

The University of Toronto at Mississauga (UTM) has held a wall-breaking ceremony to launch construction of the campus’ new Recreation, Athletics and Wellness Centre—a new building connected to existing athletic facilities.

Designed by Shore Tilbe Irwin & Partners, the centre will house an aquatics centre with a 25-metre, eightlane swimming pool, a double gymnasium, a fitness and free-weight area, a teaching studio and a running track as well as a sports medicine/hydrotherapy clinic.

The building features environmentally- friendly engineering systems and alternative energy, “reflecting UTM’s continued commitment to balance campus development with environmental responsibility.” The total project cost is $24.5 million.

“The impact of this facility will extend well beyond the campus,” said professor Ian Orchard, vice-president and principal of UTM.

“The centre represents a commitment to fitness and wellness as an overall lifestyle choice both within the university and throughout the Mississauga community.”

UTM students are contributing $16 million to help fund the 73,000-squarefoot project, slated to open in 2006.

Existing fitness spaces will be renovated as part of the project.

The project team includes electrical engineers Mulvey & Banani International Inc., mechanical engineers Smith and Andersen Consulting Engineering, structural engineers Yolles and landscape architects Fleisher Ridout Partnership. Energy conservation consultant is Enermodal.

The university has signed a letter of intent to award the construction contract to Vanbots Construction Corp.

Founded in 1967, UTM is one of three campuses of the University of Toronto.
