Construction giant EllisDon is gearing up for a July 2007 completion date on the new William Olser Health Centre (pictured above) in Brampton, Ont.
The 1.2-million-square-foot hospital will house 608 acute-care beds and 18 operating rooms.
Some 30 subcontractors are expected onsite, with a probable peak workforce in the order of 1,000.
The project is being undertaken by The Healthcare Infrastructure Co. of Canada (THICC), a partnership between EllisDon, Borealis Infrastructure Management and Carillion Canada Inc.
The consortium achieved financial close on the project late last November. In addition to delivering the necessary financing, THICC is responsible for design, construction, building operations and delivery of non-clinical services over a 25-year period.
Tim Smith, vice-president of alternative financing and procurement at EllisDon, said in an e-mail interview that the key construction challenge is “designing at a pace to suit the construction schedule — given the very complex nature of an acute-care hospital.”
The project’s construction cost was not disclosed.
EllisDon is in a joint venture with Carillion Canada as the design-build contractor. The construction company is playing the lead role.
EllisDon is also in a joint venture with Carillion for the operating period services, with Carillion taking the lead.
Architects are Parkin Architects Ltd. in joint venture with Adamson Associates Architects.
Smith said the mechanical and electrical components are set up as design-build packages, with a subcontractor as the contracting entity. Thus, the mechanical and electrical engineering consultants are employed by the subcontractors.
The mechanical subcontractor is Geo. A. Kelson Co. Ltd. Its consultants are The Mitchell Partnership Inc. and H.H. Angus & Associates Ltd.
Electrical subcontractor is Univex. Its consultants are Carinci Burt Rogers Engineering Inc. with Stebnicki Robertson & Associates Ltd. providing healthcare support.
Structural engineers are Marshall Macklin Monaghan Ltd. and Stephenson Engineering Ltd. Landscape architects are PMA Landscape Architects.
Asked whether it was an eye-opening experience being involved in one of the province’s first such public-private partnerships, Smith said EllisDon carefully sought out its partners “in order to generate a team with the full range of necessary experiences.”
Carillion, for example, brought its experience with such ventures from the United Kingdom.
