WOODSTOCK, Ont.
The Ontario government is building a new 154-bed hospital on a greenfield site in Woodstock.
The project includes a new 22-bed rehabilitation unit, 10 additional complex continuing care beds and two additional mental health beds. Construction is expected to begin in 2007-2008.
“This initiative is one of many hospital projects underway across the province as our government builds opportunities for Ontarians to achieve better health through shorter wait times for key services,” said David Caplan, Minister of Public Infrastructure Renewal.
“This is the first step in making our construction plans for a new hospital a reality,” added Dalton Ferris, Chair of the Woodstock General Hospital Board of Trustees.
“Time and time again, this community has clearly demonstrated their determination to see a modern medical facility in Woodstock,” said Terry Thompson, Chair of the Woodstock Hospital Foundation.
“From cows to cars to a modern health care facility, this announcement means Woodstock and Oxford County can offer its citizens a bright future for generations to come,” said Woodstock Mayor Michael Harding.
The Ontario government has approved the Woodstock General Hospital initiative as an Alternative Financing and Procurement (AFP) project.
This means construction work will be financed and carried out by the private sector, which will assume the project risks for ensuring delivery on time and on budget.
“The ReNew Ontario plan will make it possible for many hospitals to undertake much-needed capital improvements to facilities that, across Ontario, average 43 years old,” said Hilary Short, President and CEO of the Ontario Hospital Association.
The government and its partners are investing $5 billion over five years to improve Ontario’s health care facilities.
