Montreal plans $300-million extension of Montreal-Mascouche commuter rail line
The expansion of the Montreal commuter rail line will involve 12 kilometres of track from Repentigny to Mascouche

Construction of the 61-kilometre Montreal-Mascouche commuter rail line is expected to begin in late 2008/early 2009, says Melanie Nadeau, a spokesperson with the Agence Metropolitaine de Transport (AMT), the provincial agency responsible for commuter train service in the greater Montreal area.

The line, which will have 11 new stations, will use a combination of existing CN track and require the installation of 12 kilometres of new track from Repentigny to Mascouche.

“The new eastern line will be ready in 2010,” said Nadeau. “The current projected cost of the project is around $300 million (plus or minus 30 per cent). We will have a more precise figure later this year when we complete the engineering, impact and station concept studies.”

About half of the budget will be spent to purchase 30 double-decker passenger cars and five bi-modal locomotives, with the remainder to cover the various studies, upgrade of the existing CN track, construction of the 11 stations and the installation of infrastructure.

The route will have the line begin at the downtown central station (linked to the Bonaventure Metro station) and travel north through the Town of Mount Royal (the Canora train station) and then turn east along the Trans-Canada Highway until it reaches the tip of the island.

Of the new stations, two will built in Riviere des Prairies, one in Pointe-aux-Trembles, one in Repentigny/Le Gardeur, one in Charlemagne, one in Terrebonne and another in Mascouche. As well, a station will be built at the Sauve Metro station. Also required will be parking lots adjacent to several of the stations.

Tenders for the architects, general contractors and engineering firms will be issued following the various studies.

Last December, the AMT ratified a purchase order with Bombardier for 160 double-decker passenger cars, which will supply the cars for Montreal-Mascouche line and increase the number of cars on other routes which are experiencing increased ridership. The new cars will be delivered to the AMT between 2010 and 2011
