TORONTO

Quantum Murray Demolition has been contracted by the City of Toronto to secure the remaining structure following a building façade collapse.

It’s believed workers renovating a doorway on a store front, pictured at right, at Gould and Yonge streets last Friday removed a door lintel and weakened the support, causing the bricks facing above to disintegrate in a “domino effect.”

Toronto Fire Services said, the double-brick exterior wall on the north side on the second floor collapsed, leaving the third-floor façade hanging dangerously.

After an initial inspection Quantum Murray was called in to remove the third-floor façade and related debris and structure. City engineers are now assessing whether the second floor and related structures will also have to be removed.

Yonge Street was closed this past weekend from Dundas to Gerrard streets, but has since reopened, although the sidewalk and businesses immediately adjacent and in front of the scene remain blocked off.
