Expanded Stephen Leacock Community Centre re-opens in Toronto

Journal Of Commerce

The City of Toronto has re-opened the Stephen Leacock Community Centre in Scarborough, which recently underwent construction work funded in part by the federal Infrastructure Stimulus Fund.

Phase 3 of the redevelopment included the extension of the second floor to provide two more community rooms, a running track and offices.

The community centre, which includes a soccer and lacrosse turf, dance studio and hall for group rentals, is on Birchmount Road north of Sheppard Avenue, about 20 kilometres northeast of the downtown core in the former city of Scarborough.

It was officially re-opened by local member of Parliament Roxanne James and Norm Kelly, chairman of the Toronto parks and environment committee and city councilor for Ward 40, Scarborough-Agincourt.

The total cost of the construction project was $3.2 million, $1.06 million of which came from the federal Infrastructure Stimulus Fund, which provided money for more than 4,100 projects during the 2009-10 and 2010-11 fiscal years.
