Groupe Montoni Division Construction Inc. of Laval, Quebec has inked in agreement with Lufa Farms Inc. to build greenhouses on the roofs of industrial buildings in the Montreal area.
The new greenhouses in the Montreal area would be 80,000 to 120,000 square feet and operations are expected to begin in the middle of 2012. Groupe Montoni is aiming for certification under Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED).
The companies said in a press release Monday that the agreement is expected to result in several new rooftop farms in and around Montreal.
Lufa Farms grows and sells vegetables in the Montreal area.
Development costs for the projects will be shared and Lufa Farms will lease the Montoni roofs.
Lufa’s first commercial greenhouse is on top of a roof in Ahuntsic-Cartierville.
