NORR Architects and Engineers Private Ltd., a member of the Ingenium Group of Companies, recently celebrated its third year of business in India. The firm has offices in the cities of Mumbai and Delhi.

“The anniversary of this successful and growing local practice is truly an occasion to celebrate,” said Victor Smith, NORR president and Ingenium Group chief executive officer.

“We have great confidence in the growth of India and its increasing demand for high-quality buildings.”

An international leader in architecture, interior design, engineering, planning and project management, NORR is the 73-year-old flagship brand of the Ingenium Group. It has offices in Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom and the Middle East in addition to India.

NORR Architects and Engineers Private Ltd. was created in November 2008 to provide master planning, full-service architectural and engineering design and project management services for a wide range of transportation, commercial, institutional and lifestyle projects.

Smith said there is “a huge demand” in India for infrastructure development to keep pace with the growth in income and living standards in the country airports and transportation services, schools and universities and healthcare facilities.

The firm’s inaugural project was a project management and contract administration assignment for the Sahara Star Hotel in Mumbai. The existing facility was upgraded to five-star standards and an addition was built.

Since then, the firm has designed eight projects in the hospitality and residential sectors. It is playing an ongoing role during the procurement and construction phases. Design services are being provided from various NORR offices.

NORR Architects and Engineers Private Ltd. now has a staff of 19 Indian nationals in its offices in Mumbai and Delhi, many of whom are long-standing employees deployed from other NORR business units. Regional directors provide leadership from Dubai.

Douglas Lang, NORR’s vice-president of operations for the Middle East and India, said competition in India varies widely from project to project, and whether it is private or public sector in nature.

“More than 50 per cent of our private sector work is negotiated,” he said.

Top markets include hospitality and “premium” mixed-use projects.

Founded in Canada, NORR’s international expansion began with the establishment of a practice in the United Arab Emirates in 1989. That office began to explore the market potential in India in 2007. NORR hosted a celebration for clients, partners and development industry leaders at the Sahara Star Hotel in late November.
