Doug Stollery, PCL general counsel, is the recipient of the Canadian General Counsel of the Year Award for Lifetime Achievement.
The award, given as part of the Canadian General Counsel Awards (CGCA), highlights Stollery’s achievements throughout his career in the legal profession with PCL and his 30-year employment with Reynolds Mirth Richards Farmer LLP.
“Doug’s extensive list of accomplishments made him a deserving candidate for this award, as he has helped lead our company through increasingly complex issues while maintaining the traditional principles — such as our word is our bond — that PCL was founded on,” said PCL president and CEO Paul Douglas in a release.
After graduating as a silver medalist from the University of Alberta Faculty of Law in 1976, Stollery completed a clerkship at the Supreme Court of Canada, and went on to obtain a Master of Laws degree at Harvard Law School and is a fellow of the Canadian College of Construction Lawyers.
His accomplishments include his work on Vriend v. Alberta, a landmark human rights decision from the Supreme Court of Canada, where he argued the case on a pro bono basis. The decision of the Supreme Court of Canada in this case has been recognized as one of the “Top 10” Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms decisions since the Charter was introduced in 1982.
Stollery is an active volunteer in community organizations and currently serves as a member of the board of directors of the Alberta Law Reform Institute, the Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation, and the Stollery Charitable Foundation.
The Canadian General Counsel Awards are an annual award program designed to honor excellence in the In-House Counsel community. The Lifetime Achievement Award recognizes a senior member of the in-house bar who has a distinguished history as general counsel, a demonstrated commitment to excellence and leadership within the legal profession, and who has made a lasting contribution to their work community and the community at large.
The eighth annual Canadian General Counsel Awards will take place on June 11 at the Fairmont Royal York in Toronto.
