HAPPY VALLEY – GOOSE BAY, N.L.
Two wing infrastructure improvement projects and 10 contracts for remediation activities have been awarded at the 5 Wing Goose Bay Airfield in Newfoundland.
The airfield facilitates over 35,000 take offs and landings per year. In 2011, over 700 military aircraft accounted for close to 3,000 of those air movements.
The majority of repairs to concrete around the airfield will be made to the ramp and apron areas adjacent to the terminal. The contract for over $1 million was awarded to Crown Contracting Inc. of Mount Pearl, N.L.
The roof of Building 354, also known as the Joint Training Centre, is at the end of its life cycle and the repairs will ensure that it is used for years to come. The contract for $998,998 was awarded to Ravencor Projects Inc. of St. John’s, N.L.
The Goose Bay Remediation Project (GBRP), managed as an omnibus project with 10 sub-projects, was initiated due to contamination issues at 5 Wing Goose Bay, which can be primarily attributed to past storage and handling practices of contaminants such as hydrocarbons, heavy metals, chlorinated compounds (also known as PCBs), and pesticides (including DDT).
In the summer of 2009, Minister of National Defence Peter MacKay announced that up to $300 million would be available for the cleanup of the wing.
Of the 10 sub-projects, five have received approval for full implementation in the last two years and remediation work continues through this summer and fall.
