Site selected for $17-million recreation centre in London, Ontario

Greg Meckbach

The London, Ontario City Council has selected East Lions Park as the site for a $17-million recreation centre. Construction is expected to start in 2018 on the project, which will include an indoor pool, gymnasium and community centre, replacing an existing outdoor pool.

The City of London, Ontario announced Wednesday that City Council has selected East Lions Park as the site for a $17-million recreation centre.

Construction is expected to start in 2018 on the project, about two kilometres south of Fanshawe College. It will include an indoor pool, gymnasium and community centre, replacing an existing outdoor pool.

No request for proposals has been issued yet, said Bill Coxhead, the city’s Managing Director of Parks and Recreation.

The city plans to present designs to the community in 2016.

"I think what we're going to be doing is to engage creative architects with respect to integrating that project into a park-like setting,” Coxhead said. “It's not a typical urban environment. It's a very old, existing park so it's going to require sensitivity and that will be reflected in our RFP when we go looking for architects down the road, that they will be skilled in integrating into a very old park.”

Cox said there are two other recreation centres for which the city has yet to select sites.

One is a $20-million project also scheduled for construction starting in 2018 while a third project, is estimated at $40 million, is scheduled to start construction in 2014. Council will decide on sites for both, Coxhead said.

The East Lions project was included in the 2018 capital plan.

The recreation centre is also intended to consider the needs of existing users of the East Lions Artisan Centre, a facility on Churchill Avenue that includes studios for the London Stained Glass Guild and Forest City Decorative Artists.

East Lions Park takes up the entire block bounded by Wavell Street, Edmonton Street, Churchill Avenue and Winnipeg Boulevard, about a kilometre west of Clarke Road and half a kilometre south of Dundas Street.
