OTTAWA

HDR Architecture has been named the lead architect for the Heart Institute Life Support Capital Project, a new building addition to the University of Ottawa Heart Institute. The addition will expand services of Canada’s largest cardiovascular centre and better position the Heart Institute to stay on the cutting-edge of innovative cardiovascular treatments and procedures.

With an estimated $120 million construction budget, the addition will address existing space constraints and help plan for future growth. Slated to begin construction in the fall of 2014, the project also includes the renovation of the existing basement and upgrades to the site.

“We know that the design of cardiac centres is very different than that of a ‘typical’ hospital,” said Ingrid Felso, HDR’s managing principal in Ottawa.

“We also know that, when designed well, these spaces can aid in the healing process, enhance research, increase knowledge and translate discoveries–even prevent people from becoming unhealthy in the first place.”
