An Ottawa construction worker is dead after he was struck by a section of wall under demolition.
At approximately 3:15 p.m. on April 21, the Ministry of Labour (MOL) was notified of a workplace fatality that occurred at 234 Wellington Street in Ottawa where the head office of the Bank of Canada is undergoing major renovations.
Police say the 45-year-old worker suffered severe head trauma and died of his injuries in hospital.
The MOL issued a requirement to PCL Constructors Canada Inc. the constructor, to provide records such as training, policies and procedures and demolition/floor plans. A second requirement was issued to Priestly Demolition Inc., the employer, to provide records such as training, policies and procedures and demolition/floor plans.
The MOL issued an order to Priestly Demolition Inc. that prior to the commencement of demolition of a structure or part of a structure, the employer shall ensure that barriers are in place to prevent workers (not involved directly in the demolition process) from accessing the area of the demolition work.
A stop work order was issued to Priestly Demolition Inc. that no further block wall demolition work shall occur until compliance with the previous order has been achieved.
The MOL’s investigation is ongoing.
