Quebec ski resort to carry Club Med brand

QUEBEC CITY — Two joint venture partners have officially announced plans for the first Club Med resort in Canada, a $120-million ski resort to be built at the foot of the Le Massif ski hill in the Charlevoix region of Quebec.

The partners are Groupe Le Massif and Club Med North America. The project was announced Nov. 2 along with a federal allocation of approximately $9.8 million in financial assistance, in the form of a repayable contribution.

The project includes plans for 300 rooms including 4-Trident Club and deluxe-level rooms with a 5-Trident luxury space, notes a media statement.

The project is aimed to be a four-season resort, the statement indicates. Construction of the hotel will generate nearly 700 jobs, said the partners. Plans are to open the new resort by the end of 2020.

Other investment partners announced include the government of Quebec, Guy Laliberte and Lune Rouge, Investissement Quebec, Pierre Thabet, Groupe Germain, Desjardins and the National Bank of Canada.

Club Med has 20 ski resort sites in operation in France, Italy, Switzerland, Japan and China with more than 6,000 rooms, and there will be 15 openings taking place through 2019, representing one to two mountain resort openings per year, said Club Med. In total Club Med operates 70 resorts.

The Massif de Charlevoix project was launched in 2002 by Quebec developer Daniel Gauthier, a co-founder of Cirque du Soleil.
