CanBIM announces 2020 Innovation Spotlight Awards winners

OTTAWA — CanBIM has announced the winners of its 2020 Innovation Spotlight Awards.

The sixth annual iteration of the awards was held in a virtual format and hosted by CanBIM vice president Pietro Ferrari.

Public contractor and property owner Societe quebecoise des infrastructures (SQI) won both the Best In Innovation and Asset Management and Lifecycle awards.

Catherine MacInniss of IBI group received the Industry Trailblazer award for her work with CanBIM. She is the current chair of the organization’s project delivery and risk management think-tank and first served with CanBIM as co-chair of the legal committee.

The Carleton Digital Campus project won in the academic category for its use of a digital twin prototype developed by the Carleton Immersive Media Studio for “real-time visualization of complex datasets to run simulations, increase efficiency of facility management and operations, and support University outreach activities such as virtual experiences for students,” a CanBIM release said.

Aeroport Yul Reamenagement Partiel ASFC – Phase 2 won Magil Construction a Construction Management award. The project consisted of renovating two floors occupied by the Canada Border Services Agency. Part of the requirements of the project included maintaining full operational capacity throughout construction.

The Design and Engineering award went to Integral Group for its work in embodied carbon in MEP design and Software as a Service provider Veerum won in the digital products category.

The Digital Supply Chain award went to Pitt Meadows Plumbing and Mechanical for their implementation of Stratus, automation software that allows the firm to increase production and precision at their off-site fabrication shop.

Pomerleau Inc.’s equipment delivery simulation tool garnered the firm a Digitalization Strategy award. The tool allows teams to simulate delivery of their project to validate the path chosen is possible given the dimensions of the equipment.
