Creative concrete projects celebrated with Ontario Concrete Awards
CONCRETE ONTARIO — The Southbridge Long Term Care Home in Kemptville, Ont. was one of this year’s Ontario Concrete Award winners. The owner is Southbridge Care Homes, the Architect of Record is S.J. Lawrence Architect Incorporated, the engineer of record is Cleland Jardine Engineering Ltd. and the general contractor is Traugott Building Contractors. The material supplier is Stubbe’s Precast.

TORONTO — Innisfil Town Square, M City Condominiums in Mississauga, Ont. and Vendome Condominiums in Markham were just a few of the winners of the 2023 Ontario Concrete Awards.

The awards celebrate the most creative concrete projects in the province and were handed out at a ceremony Dec. 6 at Paramount Event Space in Vaughan.

Here’s who took home the top prizes:

Architectural Hardscape: Innisfil Town Square: Town of Innisfil (owner); PMA Landscape Architects Ltd. (architect of record); Rutherford Contracting Ltd. (general contractor); Champlain Ready Mix (material supplier); and UCC Group Inc. (hardscape contractor). Additional participants include Euclid Canada and Canada-Wide Reinforcing Steel Company.

Architectural Merit: CIVIC 66, Kitchener, Ont.: Killiam Apartments REIT (owner); ABA Architects Inc. (architect of record); MTE Consultants Inc. (engineer of record); Rizz Engineering Inc. (engineer of precast design); Melloul-Blamey Construction (general contractor); Stubbe’s Precast (material supplier); and AGF Rebar and Sika Canada (additional participants).

Infrastructure Project: Kingston 3rd Crossing, Kingston, Ont.: The City of Kingston (owner); BEAM Architects (architect of record); Hatch Ltd, SYSTRA (engineer of record); Peter Kiewit Sons ULC (general contractor); Canada Building Materials (material suppliers); DECAST Ltd. (precast supplier. Additional participants are Master Builders Solution.

Institutional Building: Southbridge Long term Care Home in Kemptville, Ont.: Southbridge Care Homes (owner); S.J. Lawrence Architect Incorporated (architect of record); Cleland Jardine Engineering Ltd. (engineer of record); Traugott Building Contractors (general contractor); and Stubbe’s Precast (material supplier). The additional participant is Sika Canada Inc.

Material Development and Innovation: 85 Vogell Road, Richmond Hill, Ont.: Orlando Corporation (owner and general contractor); Brenik Engineering Inc. (engineer of record); Innocon Inc. (material supplier); United Floor Ltd (flooring contractor); and Euclid Canada (additional participant).

CONCRETE ONTARIO — Concrete Ontario handed out the Ontario Concrete Awards at an awards ceremony Dec. 6 in Vaughan. Vendome Condominiums won in the Mid to High Rise Residential: Pre-Cast category. The project included 94,000 square feet of precast and 1,200 precast panels were installed.

 

Mid to High Rise Residential — Cast-In-Place: M CITY – M1, Mississauga, Ont.: Urban Capital Property Group, Rogers Real Estate Development Limited (owners); Core Architects Inc. (architect of record); RJC Engineers (engineer of record); EllisDon (general contractor); Innocon Inc. (material supplier); and Resform Construction Ltd. (forming contractor). Additional participants include Salit Steel.

Mid to High Rise Residential — Precast: Vendome Condominiums, Markham, Ont.: H&W Developments (owner); DIALOG (architect of record); KO Partners Ltd. (engineer of record); Caliber Structures Limited (general contractor); and TKL Group Inc. (precast concrete supplier); and Euclid Canada and Canada-Wide Reinforcing Steel Company (additional participants).

Specialty Concrete Application: County of Wellington WR32 (Lake Road) Rehabilitation, Puslinch, Ont.: County of Wellington (owner); MTE Consultants Inc. (engineer of record); Cox Construction Limited (general contractor); CEMATRIX Canada Inc. (material supplier); and Thurber Engineering Ltd. (additional participant).

Structural Engineering — Cast-In-Place: Ace Hotel Toronto: Alterra Developments, B-right, Finer Space Corporation, ProWinko Zinc Developments (owners); Shim-Sutcliffe Architects (design architects and architect of record); RJC Engineers Construction (engineer of record); Alterra Construction Management Limited (manager); Innocon Inc. (material supplier); and Salit Steel and Verdi Alliance (additional participants).

Structural Engineering — Precast: Little Long Dam Safety Bridges, Kapuskasing, Ont.: Ontario Power Generation (owner); WSP Canada Inc. (engineer of record); Peter Kiewit Sons ULC (general contractors); BPDL Inc. and BMQ, Division of Lafarge Canada Additional (material supplier); and additional participant Euclid Canada.

Sustainability: Mississauga Stormwater Tanks, Mississauga, Ont.: City of Mississauga – Transportation and Works Department (owner); Pontarolo Engineering Inc. (engineer of record); Alliance Verdi Civil Inc. (general contractor); Innocon Inc. (material supplier); and Cupolex Engineering Solutions Inc. (additional participant).
