Doer honoured with inaugural CentrePort Canada Footprint Award

WINNIPEG — CentrePort Canada Inc. recently presented former Manitoba premier Gary Doer with the first-ever Footprint Award at its annual Spring Mixer.

The Footprint Award recognizes an individual whose contributions and influence left an indelible impression in carving out the path to CentrePort’s success, states a release.

Doer served as premier of Manitoba from 1999 to 2009, then as Canada’s ambassador to the United States from 2009 to 2016.

He introduced the legislation that ultimately led to the creation of CentrePort, which is the largest inland port in the country.

“I am very honoured to receive this award, which is a testimony to our vision as a community,” said Doer in a statement. “Many of us believed CentrePort would further enhance Winnipeg and Manitoba’s place as a key hub for North American trade and transportation, and it was a privilege to be part of bringing this to reality. It’s incredible to see the growth to date at CentrePort and the legacy it is continuing to provide to our economy.”

According to the release, in 15 years, CentrePort has become one of North America’s largest trimodal inland ports, with over $800 million in construction permits issued for more than three million square feet of new buildings.

“CentrePort Canada’s transformation from an empty field of dreams into a growing centre for global trade is a testament to the visionaries who believed in its potential and worked together to make that dream a reality,” said Carly Edmundson, president and CEO of CentrePort Canada Inc. “As the premier that championed the creation of CentrePort Canada and invested in early infrastructure, such as CentrePort Canada Way, Mr. Doer was the perfect choice as the recipient of the inaugural award.”

The award will continue to be presented to individuals who demonstrate outstanding leadership and long-term commitment to advancing CentrePort Canada.
