RIDLEY ISLAND — The Ridley Energy Export Facility (REEF) project, a joint venture between AltaGas and Royal Vopak, has initiated early works on Ridley Island following the receipt of a permit from the Prince Rupert Port Authority (PRPA).
This development, initially known as the Vopak Pacific Canada project, aims to construct and operate a large-scale liquefied petroleum gas and bulk liquids terminal, along with a marine berthing and loading facility at the Port of Prince Rupert.
The PRPA, under the Port Authorities Operations Regulations of the Canada Marine Act, has authorized the REEF project to begin vegetation removal. This initial phase includes clearing, grubbing, timber salvaging and wood waste disposal within the 190-acre site leased to the REEF partnership by PRPA.
The approval is contingent on the implementation of environmental mitigation measures, which were established during the environmental review process.
The project received critical determinations and permits from the Government of Canada in 2022. In 2023, the joint venture finalized a long-term lease for a site administered by the PRPA. Vopak and AltaGas are reportedly making significant progress in various critical workstreams necessary to reach a positive Final Investment Decision, anticipated in the first half of 2024.
According to a recent press release, the REEF project is poised to provide vital tidewater access for Canadian energy and liquid bulk exports to global markets.
