One person is dead and another has been injured after a collapse at a construction site in North Vancouver.
According to Sgt. Peter DeVries with North Vancouver RCMP, officers were called to the scene at 9:45 a.m., after reports of a collapse at a construction site in the lower Lonsdale area. Fire and ambulance services also were dispatched to the scene where one person was recovered from the collapse and transported to hospital.
DeVries said the extent of this person’s injuries is unknown but they do not appear to be life threatening.
A second person was located but could not be safely recovered, say authorities.
DeVries said that they are waiting for the coroner’s service to investigate but he believes the person to be deceased from “catastrophic injuries”.
He added that the RCMP will be investigating to determine if a crime was committed, the B.C. Coroner’s Service will determine the mechanism of death and any additional workplace incident investigation will be conducted by WorkSafeBC.
DeVries said he cannot confirm what sort of work was taking place at the site, but initial observations suggest demolition work may have been taking place.
The Journal of Commerce will have more on this story as it develops.
