Manitoba looks to create an International Curling Centre of Excellence

WINNIPEG — Known as an “epicentre” for curling, Manitoba is planning to create a new year-round, state-of-the-art curling venue.

Referred to as the International Curling Centre of Excellence (ICCE), it is expected to be a professional facility with a capacity to host world-class regional, national and international events.

In 2017, the Manitoba government established the ICCE committee to help guide planning and development for the project.

The committee, chaired by Mark Olson, a Brier champion and former president of the Manitoba Curling Tour, is comprised of 13 players including Connie Laliberte and Jennifer Jones, and coaches and icemakers with experience ranging from grassroots to top-level international competitions, said a release.

At this time, the government has issued a Request for Expressions of Interest (REOI) to seek feedback from the private-sector for possible partnership or sponsorship opportunities. Through this information gathering process, potential sites that may serve as a location for the proposed facility, including leasing opportunities, will also be identified. The current vision is to secure a site between 1.5 to 6.5 acres in Winnipeg. Submissions are being accepted until July 31.

“The committee will continue to collaborate with the governance of curling to ensure the ICCE complements their mandates,” said Olson in the release. “I encourage anyone who has a view on a location in Winnipeg or has an interest in being a part of the ICCE to respond to the REOI.”
