Bruce Power, feds support energy cyber security
The federal government is allocating $407,000 to the University of Waterloo to develop an enhanced cyber security system intended to protect Canada’s energy infrastructure. A hardware assurance system will be developed by the university to detect compromised parts and devices. Bruce Power and Palitronica Inc. are among other contributors to the project.
StatsCan reports on lumber, asphalt production
Statistics Canada reported Friday that national lumber production by sawmills decreased 4.7 per cent from April to 4.929 million cubic metres in May. Production was 12.4 per cent higher than in May 2020. The agency also reported that shipments of asphalt shingles totalled 3.7 million metric bundles in June, up nine per cent from the previous month and up 0.2 per cent from June 2020.
Ontario communities receive active-transportation funds
The governments of Canada and Ontario announced last Friday they are spending $2.1 million through the COVID-19 Resilience Infrastructure Stream on active transportation projects in 16 Ontario communities. Among the projects, the Town of Marathon will improve pedestrian access to Lake Superior by installing a new accessible kayak dock, wooden trails and foot bridge and remediating the shoreline.

The Toronto branch of the Urban Land Institute is hosting an online panel discussion Aug. 17 on the theme Extraordinary Achievements in Creative Placemaking, starting at noon E.T. Speakers include Heela Omarkhail, VP of social impact at The Daniels Corporation; Jamie Bennett, interim president with United States Artists; and Tim Jones, former CEO, Artscape.
