It isn’t every day that a construction company sponsors an athlete.

But The Dalton Company Ltd., a 70-year-old Toronto firm that specializes in commercial and residential construction, is doing just that.

The company is helping underwrite the training and travelling expenses of Para-Alpine ski team member Sam Danniels, who learned to ski after breaking his back in a mountain bike accident in 2005.

He became a world-class competitor and paralympian in four short years.

“Sam’s commitment to his sport and to motivating people to excel is inspiring,” says Dalton Company communications director Andrea Zviedris.

“At Dalton, we believe in integrity, commitment and helping people become what they are capable of being — which is why aligning with Sam is such a perfect fit.”

For his part, Danniels said the new Dalton patch on his arm “definitely” brought him some luck recently, with four podium finishes in his first four races of the season.

“I am thankful for Dalton’s support and I look forward to a strong partnership.”

In his first-ever start of competitive downhill racing, Danniels finished fourth at the 2009 International Paralympic Committee World Cup finals in Whistler. The following year, he went to the 2010 Paralympic Games, but did not finish his two races. Instead of dwelling on this disappointment, Danniels is looking ahead to a brighter future.

This year, Danniels will spend about 150 days training and competing in North America, South America, Europe and Asia. His overall goal is to advance to the 2014 Paralympic Winter Games in Sochi, Russia.

“With five podiums in eight races this season, I’m proving I am in the top seed of the North American racers,” Danniels says. “I’m setting myself up for a great starting position when I return to the World Cup next year.”
