OTTAWA—Federal parliamentary secretary Kim Rudd announced the successful implementation of the largest net-zero energy housing demonstration project in Canada on March 9.
As of spring this year, a total of 26 energy-efficient homes and condominium units have sprung up across the country in Calgary, Guelph, Ottawa, Laval and Halifax.
The nationwide project received $1.96 million through Natural Resources Canada’s ecoENERGY Innovation Initiative which has been involved in low-energy and net-zero housing research for years.
Rudd recognized Owens Corning Canada, the five participating home builders, and others involved with the project.
"Our government proudly shares your vision of energy-efficient home construction. These net-zero energy homes will reduce our environmental footprint, create clean jobs of the future and help Canada become a global leader in low-carbon energy," Rudd said in a statement.
A combination of technologies such as photovoltaic panels, airtight construction with improved insulation and ground and air-source heat pumps are utilized to achieve net-zero housing.
The housing demonstration project displays the cost-effectiveness and the siginificant energy-reduction potential in future homes. The Canadian government has announced plans to invest an additional $100 million each year in clean technology and another $200 million each year to support innovation and the use of these technologies in the natural resources sector.
