DJURADJ VUJCIC/WIKIMEDIA COMMONS - A crane collapse on July 10 caused significant damage to the roof of Meridian Hall at 8 The Esplanade but reports indicated there were no injuries. Buildings were evacuated and roads were closed in the area.

TORONTO – Toronto Police reported July 10 that a crane collapsed on the roof of a building near The Esplanade and Yonge Street in Toronto.

The incident was reported around 2 p.m. Police said there was significant damage to the roof of Meridian Hall at 8 The Esplanade but reports indicated there were no injuries. Buildings were evacuated and roads were closed in the area.

Platoon Chief Kevin Shaw of Toronto Fire Services told reporters the damage was caused by a small service crane.

“The crane collapsed, causing some structural damage on the roof, but no danger to any of the floors below. It didn’t get into any of the apartment units,” said Shaw.

The Ministry of Labour, Training and Skills Development is investigating.
